Corellis and Hearn Return to Victory Lane at the Valley of Speed!
Saturday May 23, 2009
By: Rodney Rescott

A special Memorial Weekend Spectacular took place at the legendary high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway that packed in a full schedule of racing that included two features held over from last weeks rain shorted schedule.

A huge crowd was on hand to witness the best racing action in the Northeast, as the mighty Modifieds took to the speedway early in the evening for their held over Waste Management and Wohrle’s 30 lap feature event.

On the front row was the #518 of Kyle Sheldon and the #77J of J.C. Flach as the first green flag flew on the night. But the caution flew nearly immediately as the #60 of Brian Berger slowed with a broken rear end, stacking several fast cars up behind him. Several cars were forced pitside, including the #20H of Brett Hearn, #77F of Mark Flach, and the #39 of Ryan Larkin.

On the restart, Sheldon was still in command as the #87 of Hector Stratton moved into 2nd going down the backstretch. Caution flew again for the #20Q of Matt Quinn on lap 3.

The field was under power again as Stratton powered into first by lap 4. The #42 of Guy Sheldon made his way into 2nd by lap 5 and began making a race for the front. Deep in the field the #34 of Andy Bachetti, the #115 of Kenny Tremont and the #57 of Donnie Corellis began charging through the field to get to the font as well.

Back up front, it was Guy Sheldon on the top spot as he was trying to get out front and hide from what brewing behind him.

Suddenly the #115 slowed by lap 11 with motor problems, but Sheldon could relax as the #43 of Keith Flach mad his way into 2nd spot and charging to the rear deck of the #42.

Flach took over the lead on lap 16, but the #42 slowed with an apparent right rear flat as Sheldon came to a stop in turn 2. On the restart, Flach took off from the field and began to run away, but he was slowed again for the #39 of Larkin making contact in turn 4.

On the restart Flach charge out front again, but this time, the car slipped up in turn 2, and that opened the door for the #57 of Donnie Corellis. Corellis charged out front and sealed the deal by completing the remaining 8 laps at the head of the class.
At the line, Corellis scores his first win since returning to the Valley of Speed. 2nd was Andy Bachetti, 3rd was Keith Flach followed by Hector Stratton and Donnie Ackner.

The 2nd held over feature event was the Waste Management 20 lap Pro Stock feature event. Up front was the #35 of Rick Dempsey and the #88 of Tim Sayers. Dempsey took the early lead but the cautions flew often as the first flew on lap 2 for the #76 of Kevin Arnold with a flat.

Then on lap 8 for a car slowing down the backstretch. On the restart Dempsey was still in the led but the #8 of Jay Corbin dove into 2nd going down the backstretch, then charged into the lead by turn 4.

Caution flew again on lap 12, then again on lap 14 for the #35 with a flat. The final restart on lap 15 put Corbin in the position for the win. At the checkers, Corbin scores his 2nd win of 09, with Robbie Speed crossing the line 2nd, 3rd was Nick Hilt, Jon Routhier and Jason Casey rounded out the top 5.

Then the regularly scheduled program began as the Sayer’s Auto Wrecking and Chatham Printing night started out with the 20 lap Sportsman feature event. At the point it was #17 of Kevin Petrucci and Brett Haas. By turn 1, Haas had the lead but the #63 of Danny Sanchez charged from his 4th starting spot and shot to the lead by turn 3.

Caution flew on lap 4 for the #87 of Neil Stratton making heavy contact with the outside wall down the backstretch.

On the restart, Sanchez slid up the track and the #16 of Kyle Hoffman charged into the lead. Hoffman held the lead for the 8 circuits, but that all came to an end with a flat right rear tire. That gave the lead back to Sanchez as the green flew again.

That was all Sanchez needed as he pulled away from the field and took his first checkered of 2009. 2nd was the #250 of Alan Houghtaling, 3rd was Kale Groff, Kim Herrick crossed the line 4th with Chad Pierce holding on for 5th.

The Sayer’s Auto Wrecking 30 lap Modified feature event was next on the board as the front row was the #55K of the Kingfish, Mike King and the #42 of Guy Sheldon. The Kingfish launched out front and had the field covered for the first handful of laps.

But not far behind the #55K was the #20H of the jet, Brett Hearn was making his shot for the top spot. Deeper in the field was the #57T of Kenny Tremont Jr driving the backup car of previous winner Donnei Corellis. Corellis, Tremont, Bachetti, and the Doctor Danny Johnson.

Back up front, King couldn’t hold off the Jet as Hearn jumped out front on lap 11 and began to sail away. But the caution flew on lap 16 for a slowing car on the backstretch. As the cars lined up, Hearn still was in control with King in tow.

Keith Flach made his way to the 3rd spot and Sheldon was holding 4th. Hearn launched out front again and began to pull away. But the lead went away again as the yellow flew one more time on lap 26 for the slowing #98 of Eddie Marshall.

On the restart Hearn held all the cards and pulled away again from Flach’s #43 and Sheldon. That’s all it took for the Jersey jet to take the win, his first of 2009 at the Valley of Speed.

2nd was the Keith Flach, followed by Guy Sheldon, Andy Bachetti, and Kenny Tremont Jr completed the top 5.

Thee 2nd Pro Stock feature was next up for another 20 lap event for the Tinker‘s Premium $600 to win. This time it was the #44 of the Steve Hankle out front early. The caution slowed the field on lap 1, but Hankle was still in control on the restart.

The caution flew again on lap 3 as the #04 of Tom Harkins got loose off of turn 4 and making contact with the #17 of Hilt sending Harkins back across the track collecting Jon Routier’s #315.

Hankle still held the point on the next restart and began his defense of the top spot. The #8 of Jay Corbin made his way into 2nd and was challenging for the lead by lap 10. As the two leaders were dicing it out, the #38M of Mike Middleton made his way into the fray.

Middleton cleared Corbin on lap 12, and ran down Hankle by lap 15. At the checkers, the Middleton crossed the line first followed by Robbie Speed, Steve Hanlke, Jay Corbin, and Nick Hilt. The win was awarded to the #24 of Speed after a post race inspection found an illegal driveshaft under the #38M.

Cord Becker took the first Limited Pro Stock win and Frank Twing was awarded the 2nd win.

The Pure Stocks were also on tap for their 8 lap feature events. The 3 races were captured by: PS#1 Ray Hall Jr, PS# 2 Mark Webb, and PS# 3 was captured by Bob Palmer. The 4 Cylinders were also on tap, and the winners were: Matt Mooradian in the Dual Cam class, and Mike Verhagen in the Single Cam class.

Next Saturday Night at the super fast high banks is the famed Kid’s Party night brought to you by Alarms of Berkshire County and Benjamin Moore Paints! All classes will be in effect along with the return of the Budget Sportsman LVS-Accord Challenge. This will also be the last Saturday of School Appreciation Month.
