Browe Takes Advantage of Rain Shower and Front Row Start for 1st Win of ‘08

Saturday June 7, 2008

By: Rodney Rescott

A brief early evening shower cooled off the fans and the track at the Valley of Speed, but it couldn’t cool down the drivers, as the action was hot and heavy for the Greylock FCU, Earthworm Equipment, and Wohrles Food Products night of racing.

The heat was brought early and often as the Modifieds took to the legendary High Banks at
Lebanon Valley for their 30 lap feature event. At the drop of the green, Lorne Browe powered his #14 to the front of the field and settled in for a 30 lap marathon. The first of several cautions flew on lap 4, as the #74 of J.R. Heffner as he tangled back in the field causing him to go pitside for repairs.

Once he returned to the speedway, the green was waiving again with the 14 of Browe under pressure from the Kingfish, Mike King, along with the Kyle Sheldon’s #518, and the #20 of Matt Quinn. Deep in the field, the #34B of Andy Bachetti, the #34 of Steve Hough, the #115 of Kenny Tremont Jr., and the #60 of Brian Berger were charging through the field to get a shot at Browe for the lead.

But the field was slowed once again for a big crash on the front chute as the #34 of Steve Hough broke something in the front suspension after a previous lap contact with Tremont’s #115. Once the #34 broke, everyone else was just along for the ride. In all, there were 7 cars involved in the incident.

Involved were the #34 of Hough, the #34B of Bachetti, the #45 of Wayne Jelley, the #87X of Paul Gilardi, the #27 of Dave McFeeters, the #39 of Ryan Larkin, and the #98 of Eddie Marshall.

Once the carnage was cleared, the #14 was once again out front, and the #55K of Mike King was still in tow. From there on out, it was all Browe dicing through lap traffic, and emerged on top as the checkers flew.

At the stripe it was Browe, followed by an impressive finish for Mike King, Kyle Sheldon battled to finish 3rd, Matt Quinn held on for 4th, while Mark Flach Jr. survived to finish 5th.

The Sportsman division also slung some dirt on the speedway as they took to the high banks for their 20 lap feature event. At the top of the class was the #09 of Kevin Lynch, as he powered out front early. But the field was slowed quickly as the 2nd place driver Jeff Kelley slowed with ignition issues causing the field to scatter. Kelley got is #44 fix quickly and returned to the race after a short stop.

On the restart, Lynch powered away again with the #83 of Chad Pierce in tow. But Lynch lost the handle quickly and by lap 3, his car made contact with the outside wall in turn 3 which ended his night along with that of Kolby Schroder.

Once the field was under control, the green flew again, this time it was the #87 of Neil Stratton out front. Stratton held the top spot for the next dozen laps until the #5 of Chris Tryon charged to the runner spot and began pressuring the #87 for the lead.

As the white flag flew, the pressure was too much for Stratton and Tryon charged to bottom for the pass, and the win as the checkers flew. Tryon was followed closely by Stratton, 3rd across the line was Jeff Watson, Kory Sandstedt and Chard Pierce held on to complete the top 5.

The Pro Stock class was next up, and another action packed full fender battle ensued at the drop of the green with the #41 of Rob Maxon out front. But the lead didn’t last long as the #315 of Jon Routhier charged out front to lead by lap 1. The race was further back in the field as the #76 of Kevin Arnold, the #24 of Robbie Speed, the #78 of Paul LaRochelle, and thee #54L of Jimmy Langenback were slicing and dicing through the field to get to the front.

But the ’Ol ageless one, Jimmy Langenback dove his #54L to the bottom of the #315 on lap 8, bring with him the #24 of Speed and the #78 of LaRochelle.

The was pretty much all the hall of famer needed, even with a late race stumble, Langenback held all the boys at bay, and took his 1st win of 2008. At the checks the #54L was followed by the #8 of Jay Corbin, Speed held on for 3rd, LaRochlle was 4th, and Rick Dempsey survived to finish 5th.

Scott Kilmer charged to the lead on lap 4 of the Limited Pro Stock race, and checked out to win his 3rd feature in a row. Tim Sayers crossed the line 2nd, followed by Jay Kreutiziger Jr., Jery Helms Jr, and Frank Twing.

The last of thee full fendered events was the 4 Pure Stock feature events. The winners are as follows: PS#1 John Chapman, PS#2 Doug Olds, PS#3 Ray Hall, Jr., and PS#4 Jesse Murphy. In addition to the Pure Stocks, the 4 cylinders also took to the speedway as Todd Goldstein and Travis Tromans took their respective divisions.
