Sheldon Makes Valley History in Bizarre Night of Action

May 5, 2007

West Lebanon, NY: The Valley of Speed was packed in both the stands, and in the action this past Saturday night.  Full cards of events were on tap for night of hot action, including some bizarre finishes, and serious incidents.

With a week off of action due to last week's rain out, the Big Blocks Mods were geared up and ready for action for their Benjamin Moore Paints 30 lap feature event.  At the drop of the green, the #88D of Ronnie Dwyer led the field to turn one.  While the field exited turn two, Paul Gilardi's #87X broke cause the rest of the field to scramble to get out the way.  Several cars were damaged, including the Andy Bachetti, Kenny Tremont, Russ Reckner, and Guy Sheldon.  The only car that had to retire was Gilardi.

At the next green flag, Dwyer once again took the top spot and paced the field for most of the night.  Hounded the #88D was the new guy, Jeff Trombley aboard his #21J.  Dwyer proved too strong early in the event.  On Lap 11, Tremont, while marching through the field with Bachetti, suffered another flat tire as the caution flew.  But all eyes were out front, as Dwyer was getting pressure from Trombley, and a charging J.R Heffner.

The night turned bizarre when the #88D was about to complete lap 23 when going into turn three he suffered brake failure and careened into the outside wall; causing several damage to the car. While he did walk away from the incident just shaken and sore, the car was done for the night. This handed the lead over to another hard charger, Hollywood Guy Sheldon.

When the green flew; the #42 of Sheldon paced the field for the remaining 7 circuits to complete a history making event.  For the first time in Lebanon Valley history, a Father, Son won a Modified event back to back.  Sheldon crossed the line first, followed by Heffner.  Third was the #34 of Steve Hough, followed by Jeff Trombley, and Kyle Sheldon.  Notable were: Eddie Marshall 6th, Kenny Tremont 9th, and Andy Bachetti 10th.

Also on tap was the CR Concrete $1,000.00 to win Sportsman Classic 20 lap event.  At the drop of the green the #J5 of Bob Bouchard looked to have the car to beat, until he was reeled in by veteran racer Chris Kokosa aboard his familiar #00.  But Bouchard's led soon evaporated on lap 14 when contact between the #25B of Rob Barilie and the #95 of Carmon Carnibucci on the backstretch caused a multi-car pile-up resulting in a red flag for nearly 10 minutes.

Carnibucci was the last to exit his wrecked racer under his own power, but was very sore after multiple contacts.  Cars that were retired for the night were the #25B of Barilie, Carnabucci's #95, the #83 of Chad Pierce, the #87 of Neil Stratton, the #9 of Ed Harkins, and the #80 of Kory Sandstedt.  Once the green flew it was the Bouchard and Kokosa out front, but during the long red flag, something went away on the #00, and he quickly faded back through the field. Then by lap 17, he was out of the event after spinning in turn three.  But Bouchard could hold on, as the #16 of Kyle Hoffman charged to the top spot with just a few laps remaining to take the CR Concrete $1,000.00 20 lap Sportsman feature.

Following Hoffman to the checkers was Bouchard, followed by Chris Tryon, Frankie Harper, and Alan Houghtaling rounding out the top 5.

The Pro Stocks had their chance at the Valley of Speed with their 20 lap feature event, and thankfully, this one was pretty uneventful, as Jay Corbin passed Chris Crews and Jay Casey to take the top spot on lap 15, and never looked back.  Corbin takes his first of the year followed by Casey, Crews, Kevin Arnold, and Mike Middleton rounding out your top 5.

The Limited Pro Stocks had a scary moment as the #6 of John Santolin made hard contact with the infamous turn three wall, careening him back across the speedway into the #41 of Rob Maxon.  Maxon's car then made hard contact into the turn four wall, damaging the wall itself.  Thought the car was damaged beyond repair, Maxon was done for the night, Santolin was later transported to a local hospital suffering from back pain, but was said to be ok at press time.

After repairing the boilerplate in turn four, the racing continued with the #98 of Justin Herron capturing his first win this season, followed by Nick Hilt, Dave Colwell, Joe Mennite, and Kevin Winters.

Another special event on the night was the 20 lap Boomer's Performance Pure Stock Clash.  The Legend, Pete Wiegand charged from the back of the pack to take the checkers, followed by Tim Sayers, Tom Harkins, Shannon McDermott, and Mike Eichstedt.

In addition, to the Clash, the regular Pure Stock features were in the house with Ray Hall, Sr. taking PS#1; Lou Ganzar captured PS#2, while Shannon McDermott captured PS#3.

The last event on the night was the 4 cylinders, as Phil Defiglio took the checkers in the Double Cam class, and Jim Williams took the checkers in the Single Cam class.

Next Saturday night is the Doherty Brothers Construction and Chatham Printing presenting the Royals Garage $3,000.00 to win Big Block Modified Feaure.  You are surely not gonna want to miss this one!
