Schatz Captures Coveted Valley Win; Jelley Takes 358
Checkers
Sunday July 23, 2006 by: Rodney Rescott
West Lebanon, NY: The sun finally broke free of the cloud cover to heat
up the action at the Valley of Speed. Just in time for the annual swing
through Upstate New York of the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series. Donnie
Schatz took about 3 seconds to figure out the super fast high banks, and
dominated the 30-lap CARQUEST Sprint Car Shootout.
Jason Martin's #36 brought the field and the capacity crowd to the green
flag. But the lead was short lived as Martin took the car too deep in
turns 3 and 4, spinning the car but continuing only to have the caution come
out anyway due several cars getting collected in the skirmish. When
the green flew again, it was all Schatz powering away from the field in his
#15. A few more caution flew, but it was just a delay in the inevitable,
as Schatz took the checkers by 3.5 seconds over second place runner Lucas
Wolfe. Wolfe was followed by Daryn Pittman, Brooke Tatnell crossed the
line fourth, and Chad Kemenah rounded out the top 5.
The Benjamin Moore 358 Super Series was also on the card for a special Syracuse
150 qualifier. The 24-lap event came to the green with Tom Faxon and Kory
Gurney on the front row. But all eyes were at the back of the field as
the big guns geared up to make the charge to the front. The usual
suspects of Andy Bachetti, J.R. Heffner, Matt Quinn, and Donnie Corellis all
began to charge to the front, along with an invading Brett Hearn. Tom Faxon
jumped out and powered his Faxon Trucking #171 to the point and tried to run
away and hide. The hard-charging handful began to pick away and work to
the front, and by lap 9, the first to the front was the Rifenburg #21 of Donnie
Corellis. Corellis took the lead from Faxon, and checked out on the
field. Quinn, Bachetti, Hearn, and Heffner all got caught up in traffic
trying to get to the front, and that's all Corellis needed to get away.
With five laps left in the 24 lap CARQUEST feature, Wayne Jelley quietly snuck
into 2nd, behind Corellis and tried to mount a charge. But nothing was
going to stop the #21, except for the unexpected. That's exactly what
happened, while coming through turn 4 to the white flag lap, all power was lost
on the #21, and the car pulled to the inside and stopped right by the start
finish line. After the #21 was towed off the track, Jelley took control,
and held off Hearn for a one-lap shoot out to take the win. Jelley took
the checkers with Brett Hearn crossing in 2nd, 3rd was the Mighty Matt Quinn,
Andy Bachetti was fourth, and Ray Hoard rounded out the top 5. Heffner
drove to a 6th place run, followed by Ted Teal, Denny Young Jr, Buddy Henke
(R), and
Rich Salisbury completing the top 10.
The Pro Stocks were also on the card for a special 12 lap CARQUEST Dash for
Cash. Kevin Arnold took the lead on lap 1 and left the field behind
capturing the Dash. Chris Crews was 2nd, Paul LaRochelle crossed the line
3rd followed by Rick Dempsey and Jay Corbin to complete the top 5.
Sheldon Oil, Big Boys Toys, and CLS Transportation take over the Valley of
Speed this Saturday July 29th for a full night of racing action, including the
ACOT Midgets. Gates open at 5pm, racing starts at 6pm.
