Berger, Salisbury, and Goewey "Roll" to Wins on Freihofer Night
Saturday July 1, 2006 - By Rodney Rescott
West Lebanon, NY: There is nothing like the seat smell of freshly baked
cookies; especially when they are made by the best, or they do it at the race
track. Freihofer Baking Company and Wohrle's Foods presented a Night of
Features along with the Benjamin Moore paints 358 Super Series.
With a couple of chocolate chip cookies in one hand, and the green flag in the
other, it was time to go racing. Denny Soltis aboard his familiar #0
brought the field to the green. The field was slowed only by one caution
on lap two involving the unsponsored #9 of Mark Pullen, spinning off turn four.
All cars were able to continue.
At the green, Solis went back to work, but the PLT #60 of Brian Berger was not
going to finish second again, and dropped to the bottom groove to take over the
top spot with just 5 laps in the books. The usual suspects deep in the
field were struggling to get through the pack to get to the front. Kenny
Tremont, who was piloting a back-up Flach Cranes #43 due to an incident in the
heats with the #4 of Bachetti at the start of the qualifier. The S&S
Asphalt 115 was totaled as he made head-on contact with the turn 4 wall at speed,
Bachetti was able to continue, but was relegated to his pit after being
penalized for rough riding.
The #4 and the #43T of Tremont started from the rear, and was slow going to get
to the front, especially with no cautions. Bachetti could only manage an
8th place finish, while Tremont managed a 14th. Ronnie Dwyer drove his
Bedell Racing Engines #88D to the second position to try and run down the race
leader Berger, but in the waning laps, ran out of tires and passed by the hard
charging Marshall Oil #98 of Eddie Marshall.
But at the end of 30 laps, it was the #60 of Brian Berger finally capturing his
first win of 2006. Marshall powered his way into 2nd; 3rd was
Dwyer. John Hewitt and Guy Sheldon rounded out the top 5.
The Benjamin Moore 358's took to the Valley of Speed for another 24 lap feature
event. This time the pole sitter; Silly Engine powered, Harrington Farms
#24s of Rich Salisbury took control at the green, and set sail to another zip
code; as everyone else played catch-up. There was no one that was gonna
come close, as Salisbury had the field covered. The #24s crossed the line
first with Donnie Corellis closing in fast, only to run out of time and came
home second. Third was the #4 of Andy Bachetti, followed by Kenny Tremont,
and the #5 of J.R. Heffner.
The Sportsman division had their 20 lap feature event looked well in hand
for the defending champ Art Collins aboard his familiar #68, but a stout O2
Solutions, Bedell Racing Engines #02 driven by K.C. Goewey ran the Alligator
down, and passed him for the lead with just 4 laps remaining. And it was
all over by the cryin', as Goewey charged to the win, followed by another
impressive charge by Jeff Watson. Collins crossed the line 3rd, followed
by Frank Harper, and Chris Tryon.
Jay Corbin struck while the iron was hot, and snuck in to take the win in the
Pro Stock division. Corbin captured his 2nd win of the year, with Don Carlson
finishing a strong 2nd, followed by Rob Yetman, Paul LaRochelle, and Rob
Langevin capping off the top 5.
Nick Hilt held off a late race charge by Brian Keough in the Limited Pro
Stocks, to capture his 2nd win of 2006.
Nearly 50 Pure Stock cars were on tap to take the green for their 4 events of
the night. The winners were; Pure Stock #1 - Mike Eichstedt, his 2nd of
2006. PS#2 was captured by Chip Martin, his 1st win. Pure Stock #3
saw the "Wiley One" Pete Wiegand make a last lap pass to capture his
4th win of 2006. PS#4 saw Jesse Murphy take his 3rd win of the
year. Congratulations to all the winners!
