New Lebanon, NY: "Summer" finally made an appearance in Upstate
New York, bringing with it the hot temperatures, and the hot racing action at
the Valley of Speed. A huge crowd nearly filled the stands to capacity to
see the action get heated up in every division presented by Dougherty Brothers
Construction and DMC Racing Products.
The spotlights were on the Modifieds once again, as the field of 26 took to the
High Banks with a couple of Flach's on the front row. Keith and Mark
Flach Jr. brought the field to the green, but 3 caution flags in just 2 laps
completed made for a long night for many contenders. The biggest shake-up
was with Andy Bachetti, J.R. Heffner, and Kenny Tremont involved in separate
incidents, relegating them to the back of the field with damaged race cars.
With these font runners left to limp around the speedway, back at the front,
Paul Gilardi took control of the point from his 4th starting position by lap 5,
and he was gone. Hot on his heals all race was the "Mighty"
Matt Quinn, but he wasn't gonna deny the #87X from his first win of 2006, only
his 2nd of his career.
With the win, along came a Gift Certificate for a Hoosier Tire provided by DMC
Racing products. Following Gilardi to the stripe was Quinn. 3rd was
a charging Russ Reckner, Mark Flach Jr. was 4th, with John Hewitt completed the
top hand full.
The Benjamin Moore 358 Super Series was also on tap for a 24 lap feature
event. And once again it was the Wild Child Andy Bachetti charging to the
front from the 5th row to take the victory over J.R. Heffner, Matt Quinn, Keith
Flach, and Wayne Jelley in fifth. Notable, Mark Pullen in his #30
"One Man Crew" Special, was the last car on the lead lap in 12th,
Kenny Tremont faded from the top 5 to finish 15th.
The Sportsman Division made their way on the High Banks for their 20 lap
feature. Danny Sanchez and Chad Pierce brought the field to the green;
the cautions flew early and often. By lap three, Pierce had spun putting
himself to the rear of the field along with Sanchez. Other notables were
the #00 of Chris Kokosa and the #25 of Frankie Harper, both involved in
separate incidents, also had to start from the back.
That left the race wide open, so Kyle Hoffman drove his #16 to the front, and
stayed there until Jeff Watson decided it was his turn at the top spot. A
great battle between the two ensued, but it was Watson who powered to the
front, and never looked back. Jeff Watson took the checkers, with Hoffman
in tow. K.C. Goewey crossed the line 3rd, Ryan Larkin finished 4th, and
Alan Houghtaling rounded out the top 5. Notables, Kokosa charged his way
back through the field to finish 6th, Kevin lynch drove his #09 to a 7th place
finish, Kory Sandstedt, Ed Harkin, and Carmon Carnibucci completed the top
10. Watson also receive a gift certificate from DMC for an American Racer
Tire, which Watson said would be put to immediate use!
The featured event of the night was the Pro Stock "Bubba Tanner
Classic" presented by DMC Racing Products. This 23 lap event had a
payoff of an additional $500.00, along with a nearly 3 foot tall trophy.
And once again, the cream rose to the top; as Rob Yetman's domination at the
Valley of Speed continued with his 4th win of 2006. A strong 2nd place
finish for Jason Casey, with Jay Corbin, Rob Langevin and Jon Routhier
completing the top nickel. Notable, Dwayne Quennville brought the crowd
to its feet when he drove his #23 almost "out of the park" during the
feature event. He would be ok, but the car wasn't so lucky.
George Miles Jr took his 4th Limited Pro Stock win of 2006, with the #17 of
Nick Hilt, Brian Keough, Justin Herron, and Dirk LaPierre completed the top 5.
The Pure Stocks once again brought the crowd to their feet, as over 55 cars
took to the speedway in 4 different events. Pure Stock #1 saw Paul Engwer
and Chip Martin Battle it out for the win, but it was Engwer with a last lap
pass to take the win. Dan Olds powered his way to the front with his #85
to take his fist win of 2006 in pure Stock #2. Chrissy Hilt and Matt
Humes battled for honors in Pure Stock #3, but Humes prevailed taking his 2nd
of 2006. And Brian Houghtaling drove his #28 to the checkers with Randy
Myers and Shannon McDermott crossing the line behind in nearly a photo finish.
